Tony Powell (Dirty Dirty House Club, LA)

Bio
Tony Powell’s passion for music began at the early age of 3 when it became obvious to his parents that his destination would include the field of dance and music. Being naturally curious, Tony would spend hours learning the different components of the family stereo system and soaking in the sounds of his parents record collection which included R&B, Jazz, and Funk.

Tony got his first taste of DJ’ing at the notorious Hollywood underground club “The Beef”, which is where he worked endlessly to perfect his craft. His potential was recognized by club “Horizon” DJ Bobby Martin and by the mid-early 90’s, Tony was controlling the dance floor at a spot known as “Club Lui”. It was at this L.A hot spot that Tony indulged the musical tastes of artists/actors such as Madonna, and Iman, to name a few. His ability to create the perfect balance of classics, and underground goodies also caught the ears and eyes of promoters Farell & LaRue.

Out of this union came club “Maxx” where he delighted dancers with his signature brand of “Tribal” rhythms. What put Tony Powell on the map as one of L.A.’s most sought after DJ’s was his highly successful, 8 year, residency at the “The Men’s Room” in Hollywood, which included Gospel, Jazz and Latin percussion style House Music. Tony has enjoyed several other residencies which include “Escandalo” and rotating residencies “D.Y.M.K”, Rise, love-n-happiness, Stereo, plus guests spots at “The End up” in S.F, ”Sauce Box in Seattle, and “The Garage” in Las Vegas to name a few. In between club gigs, Tony also donates his time whenever possible to worthy causes such as the Universal AIDS Project Summer Fest and has headlined L.A.’s Gay Pride 3 yrs in a row, and Tony’s impeccable understanding of Dance Music lead to a stint as one of Billboard Magazine’s music reporters.

After a short break in 2002, Tony returned to the scene with radio exposure at “Powertools Mix show” as well as DJ’ing in countless one-off special events, which included (“SoulHeaven”/L.A.,”Soulplanet:Sessions”) and with fellow DJ Jaime G created the club “Stepwell” followed by club “Trabajo!” in June of 2003.

On August 3rd, 2003 Tony experienced a major highlight in his DJ career with his 1st ever performance at Marques Wyatt’s club “DEEP” in Hollywood which went down in the history of House Music as one of the best sets ever performed at the club which has hosted the likes of Little Louie Vega and Frankie Knuckles, two DJ’s whom Tony considers to be his inspirations coming up as a DJ. By popular demand, Marques Wyatt invited Tony back to club DEEP to hold it down for him while he was away at the 2004 Winter Music Conference. Honored by the invitation, Tony took on the responsibility and held the evening with the style and grace of a true master craftsman. Now a DEEP favorite, Tony was invited by Marques to blessed the decks at the club two more times later that year.

Further highlights of 2004 included, several performances at Inspiration – afterhours in Los Angeles, a guest spot at club Batucada in Arizona, and he ended the year in true style as the headliner for Therapy - Los Angeles’ New Years Eve bash.

Currently, Tony Powell can be found presiding at his Thursday night residency in Silverlake / Hollywood called “DDHC”, and at his monthly “Membership Only” afterhours – “FAITH” along side his production partner eric.N.stereo. Tony’s finely tuned ear has also progressed to the art of music production as a member of “The Funk Inn” producer/remix team. The Funk Inn, are presently producing a special remix project for the 80’s Super Group KLYMAXX slated for release in 2005.
